Country EstatesNorfolk is fortunate to have a great many outstanding houses most of which date from between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries. The grandest of all houses is undoubtedly Holkham Hall, known for its classical design and superb marble hall and statue gallery. Other country Estates include the Jacobean built Blickling Hall set in stunning wooded parkland, and another magnificent eighteenth century mansion, Houghton Hall, one of the finest examples of palladium architecture in the country.

HousesThe appearance of Norfolk’s houses varies due to the wide range of different building materials in the county. Some are faced with flint, others constructed using the deep red Norfolk brick or the pale Suffolk brick. In the South of the County exist many timber-framed houses with steep pitched roofs and large fireplaces. Norfolk has probably one of the finest Arts and Crafts houses in the country incorporating 15 bedrooms and constructed of flint brick and stone. Among the more contemporary properties are individual arhictect designed houses.

Cottages and BungalowsNorfolk has a variety of cottages, some that once housed fishermen in small coastal villages, to farm workers cottages in the country. Many are functional, while others have been extended and added to changing their once simple appearance into a more comfortable and modern environment. On certain Country estates were built model villages consisting of cottages specifically for the estate workers usually constructed around a central courtyard or green. Norfolk is also home to a complete reconstruction of an Iceni village.
