Castles, Churches and RuinsThere still over six hundred medieval churches in Norfolk and the substantial ruins of over fifty monasteries, priories and castles are scattered around the county. A striking example is the remains of a tenth century Abbey incorporating an eighteenth century brick windmill on the junction of three rivers. The majority of the churches are Norman and built of knapped flint. A curios example features two existing side by side with the ruins of a third in the same churchyard.

Waterways and WindmillsThe unique landscape of the Broads is made up of twelve large and twenty four small lakes or meres which are connected by a network of meandering rivers and dykes, covering nearly two hundred and fifty miles of navigable waterways and surrounded by reeds and marshland. A particular feature of this landscape are the seventy or so windmills that exist, such as The Berney Arms Mill, the tallest in the country standing seventy feet high and incorporating seven stories, as well as the picturesque How Mill on the river Ant.

Woods, Follies and CuriositiesThe Norfolk countryside is a gentle undulating landscape interlaced with deciduous and conifer woods, the largest being Thetford Forest covering an area approximately eighty sq miles. Other woods such as the ones at Blickling Hall and Houghton Hall are integral features of the grand parks that surround them. As to the follies and curiosities, Norfolk is home to a number of unusual constructions, for example the large mausoleum in the form of a giant pyramid, and the 18th century Tower of Cubes.
